ChatGPT Search: The Free AI-Powered Search Engine That Could Rival Google

OpenAI is once again making waves in the world of AI. After being exclusively available to paying subscribers since its launch on October 31, 2024, ChatGPT Search is now free for all users with an OpenAI account. This major announcement was made during a YouTube livestream on December 16, 2024. Designed to provide structured answers based on sources it deems reliable, this enhanced version of ChatGPT Search is set to challenge traditional search engines like Google.

ChatGPT Search is Now Free and Improved

This move is part of OpenAI's broader strategy to democratize access to its AI tools. Following the rollout of the Sora assistant in over 150 countries, the introduction of the Projects feature, and the launch of a $200 subscription plan offering access to advanced features, OpenAI continues to innovate. Its "Advent Calendar" initiative promises a new announcement every day for 12 days. On December 16, the spotlight was on the availability of ChatGPT Search for all users, regardless of subscription status.

But that's not all. OpenAI has also introduced several key enhancements designed to encourage users to move away from traditional search engines and embrace conversational AI-driven search.

New Features in ChatGPT Search

  1. Showcasing Popular Websites
For common queries like “online clothing stores” or “best travel agencies,” ChatGPT Search now displays direct links to popular platforms such as ASOS, Zalando, and Skyscanner. These links appear at the top of the screen and in the sidebar, making it easier for users to find what they need quickly.

  2. Enhanced Response Display
ChatGPT Search has been upgraded to look and feel more like a traditional search engine. It now includes interactive maps for location-based searches, weather updates, illustrative images, and content from third-party platforms like YouTube. It can also present results as lists, improving readability and navigation. For instance, if you search for "nearby gyms," you'll see a map with relevant locations highlighted, along with a list of options.

  3. Default Search Engine Integration
Users can now set ChatGPT Search as their default search engine. By clicking on their profile picture and selecting “Get ChatGPT Search extension,” they can install the Chrome extension. This allows users to enter search queries directly into the browser’s address bar, just like with Google or Bing.

  4. Voice-Powered Web Search
Voice-driven search functionality is also on the horizon. With this feature, users will be able to access real-time web information through voice commands. For example, a user could say, "What's the latest movie release in theaters?" and get instant results. However, this option will initially be limited to paid subscribers, with OpenAI stating that it is still "in progress."

How to Use ChatGPT Search

ChatGPT Search is available for free on all platforms, but users must have an OpenAI account. To access it, users can visit chatgpt.com or use the ChatGPT desktop, iOS, or Android applications.

By default, ChatGPT detects when a web search is necessary and activates the Search feature automatically. However, users can also trigger the feature manually by clicking on the globe icon (labeled “Web Search”) in the input bar. This ensures that users retain control over when and how the tool connects to the web.

With these new features and a focus on accessibility, ChatGPT Search has the potential to redefine how users interact with search engines. OpenAI's strategy clearly aims to position it as a credible competitor to Google, offering more contextual, conversational, and personalized search experiences.
