Instagram Revamps Its Grid and Extends Reels to 3 Minutes: A Look at the Latest Updates

Instagram has unveiled a series of major updates, seemingly aimed at attracting users impacted by TikTok's recent turbulence in the U.S. Between January 17 and 19, 2025, Meta’s platform introduced new features, including longer Reels, a redesigned grid, and a brand-new video editing app called Edits.

Extended Reels Duration

Instagram has officially increased the maximum duration of Reels to 3 minutes, doubling the previous limit of 90 seconds. This change, announced by CEO Adam Mosseri on his personal account, mirrors a feature TikTok has offered since 2021. Mosseri emphasized that the decision aligns with user demands, despite previously stating that longer videos might dilute Instagram’s core identity of fostering close connections.

Previously, Instagram experimented with 10-minute Reels but decided against it, citing concerns about altering the platform's content style.

New "Liked by Friends" Tab in Reels

Another update announced by Mosseri includes the introduction of a new tab in the Reels section. This feature allows users to view videos liked or commented on by their friends, reminiscent of Instagram’s former Activity tab, which was removed several years ago. The rollout will begin in select countries before expanding globally.

Instagram Grid Makeover

Perhaps the most visually significant update is the redesign of Instagram’s iconic square grid. The platform has now shifted to a vertical display, better suited for modern content consumption habits. This change aims to enhance the visibility of vertical photos and videos, which have become the norm.

While the update is rolling out gradually, it has received mixed reactions. Many users expressed frustration over the disruption to their carefully curated profiles. In response, Instagram is developing a tool that will allow users to rearrange their grids to better fit their aesthetic preferences.

Introducing Edits: Instagram's Video Editing App

In an effort to compete with ByteDance's CapCut, Instagram is set to launch a new standalone video editing app called Edits, which will be available for download starting March 13, 2025.

According to the App Store listing, Edits will include features such as:

  • Watermark-free exports
  • Background removal tools
  • Adjustable resolution and refresh rates
  • A selection of fonts, sound effects, and voiceovers
  • AI-powered editing capabilities

Mosseri has described Edits as a "comprehensive creative suite," positioning it as a serious contender in the video editing market.

Instagram's Ambitious Expansion Strategy

These updates clearly show Instagram’s aggressive push to retain and attract users amid increasing competition from TikTok. With a longer Reels duration, a new user-friendly grid, and a powerful editing app, the platform aims to cement itself as the go-to hub for content creation and social engagement.
